What is contact dermatitis?
Contact dermatitis is a type of inflammation of the skin that is triggered by being in contact with a substance that is an allergen or irritant.
The symptoms of contact dermatitis
Symptoms of contact dermatitis are usually most common on the hands and face but can affect any area on the body. The symptoms include:
-
Red, irritated and inflamed skin that may be sore or itchy
-
Dry, cracked and blistered skin on the affected areas
-
In some cases, you may experience a burning sensation
How to cope with contact dermatitis
Avoid the irritant
If you know what has caused your contact dermatitis i.e. laundry detergent or soap stop using them immediately to prevent it from getting any worse.
Soak in a cool bath
Soaking in a cool bath will not only help soothe the affected area but will also help to keep your skin clean and hydrated.
Gentle drying
It’s tempting to rub your skin with a towel to dry it and you may think it will help with the itching, but it’s better to pat your skin dry to avoid causing any more irritation.
Apply Eurax HC Cream
Use sparingly on a small area twice a day for up to 1 week to alleviate the inflammation and itching caused by dermatitis.
Apply cool compresses
A cool wet compress can help soothe your skin. Moisten a clean, soft washcloth and hold against the affected area. Repeat several times a day as necessary.
Resist scratching
Itchy skin can be irritating and the urge to itch can sometimes be strong but avoiding scratching the area will help prevent further irritation or infection.
